It was no small task: design a digital memorial that would tell someone's story and take the visitor on a journey of their life.

Memories is a digital memorial service that uses interactive timelines to house memory cards of a person's life. These memory cards contain treasured moments and milestones from the subject's life through time-stamped image galleries, videos and quotes. Friends and relatives can leave comments and have discussions.

As Creative Director, I and the team at KPMG Digital Experiences created every aspect of this service, from Digital Strategy and User Experience to Art Direction, Web and app Design and Full-Stack Development.

A foundation of solid research

We began with research and development, understanding our target customers. Our blueprint, prioritised using the Kano method — prioritising features by 'must-haves' to 'extras' based on what the target customers wanted — outlined core features for the initial release. This guide directed our project.

We collaborated with the client, validating our ideas and user scenarios. A responsive prototype was crafted, incorporating user feedback. After testing and refining, our designers established the product's final look before construction.

A design system crafted with purpose

The Memories design system was meticulously crafted, encompassing everything from controls and buttons to form fields and card designs while prioritising accessibility at every step.

We created a design system with smooth user interactions, well-crafted controls, and easy-to-use form fields.

Navigating the complex landscape of responsive web design, iOS, and Android app development requires a design system of remarkable versatility.

Memories come in all shapes and sizes

Some memories are rich with details; dates, comments, and locations, but some have very few. The Memory Cards were designed to be flexible, which meant that even Memory Cards with little information could stand proudly on the timeline.

Flexibility was the first consideration, quickly followed by accessibility and different screen sizes. The layouts for both the responsive website and the app allowed the text to be enlarged at no cost to legibility.

A memorable icon family

An entire icon suite was created that riffed on the Memories Infinity Cloud logo, with its little notch cut out.

All icons were drawn on a grid and shared the same stroke and visual weight.

Results

The Memories web platform and apps were delivered in 12 weeks and have gone on to feature in Wired Magazine and on the BBC.
